Problems caused by Uterine Fibroid?From: Kitty (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 4 Jun 1999 11:10:25 -0500 (CDT)
A large Fibroid was discovered in a routine pelvic exam several months ago. Actually, it was discovered the year prior but appeared insignificant at that time and this time must have been a bit larger. The nurse-practitioner who did my exam said my uterus was the size of a grapefruit. I had one episode of bleeding between periods but everything since that time has been normal (about every 24 days). Because of my age (just turned 50), she did not recommend doing anything about the Fibroid as Menopause normally shrinks the them. My uterus is tilted back as explained to me, and I believe that either the size or the location is causing other very uncomfortable problems. For one, I am always severely constipated and suffering from excessive gas that is not only extremely embarrassing but painful at times. I spoke to my gynecologist and my family doctor and both said that the Fibroid "could" be causing those problems. However, other than adding more fiber, taking Metamucil daily, drinking more water, or taking an occasional laxative, they suggested no other solutions because I'm not suffering from painful cramps nor excessive bleeding. These solutions have not worked and in fact, after taking Metamucil for a full week, along with a laxative-stool softener, and trying to increase the water, fruit juices, etc. I finally had some relief last night but still feel bloated and crampy and quite honestly very depressed. I am almost at the point where I'd like to lie to my Dr. about the bleeding and severe cramps just to get them to consider some other solution, like surgery. I don't look forward to surgery by any means but I need some relief and it could be a few years before menopause starts. Should I keep pursuing the issue with my Dr.? Are there other women complaining about these same issues? It's certainly not something I am comfortable discussing with anyone.
