During the first half of the menstrual cycle, from the 1st day of bleeding to ovulation, estrogen stimulates the follicles in the ovary, and eventually, one, or perhaps two, will become dominant, fluid filled primary follicles that contain the egg. The egg is released with ovulation, and the area that was the primary follicle is transformed into a hormone factory designed to provide support for the endometrium and fertilized egg. This area is yellow in color, and is called the corpus luteum (L. yellow body). This corpus luteum has a life span of 14 days, unless conception takes place. If conception does not take place, the corpus luteum scars over into a corpus albicans (L. white body), withdrawing its hormonal support of the endometrium, which itself dies and is expelled as your menses.

The OCP generally, though not completely, prevents ovulation, thereby preventing the corpus luteum. The corpus luteum can for a cyst, and that cyst can occasionally bleed into itself, producing a hemorrhagic cyst that can be extremely painful.
