After the baby...From: CK (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 13 May 1999 17:41:45 -0500 (CDT)
My cousin had a baby almost 6 weeks ago. At first, she was bleeding quite heavily and passing many large clots but would not see the doctor for this problem. She commented yesterday on how she was so happy that her bleeding is finally slowing down...she is down to 1 pad every 2 hours whereas when she had her first child, she had to wear the maternity pads for a year. I thought this was very abnormal and told her she really should see a doctor. Today, she walked her oldest child to school and in the two minute walk around the block she managed to soak a maxi pad. Her son's teacher asked her if she was OK, if she had fallen or something. She had blood all over her. She was soaking a pad every 15 minutes today. She still thinks this is normal for her. I believe she really needs to be checked out. I've never had a child so I'm not sure what "normal" bleeding is after a baby is born...I know it shouldn't be any more than 1 pad per hour. I did not realize though that the bleeding lasts this long (6 weeks now). I also know that she had been wearing tampons along with a pad for a few weeks...could the use of tampons so soon after the baby have anything to do with this? What is the normal amount of bleeding that should occur and how long should this continue? Thanks in advance for any answers. Char ;^)
