The cause of anencephaly and other neural tube defects is not known. Most feel it is related to a defect in the metabolism of folic acid. The risk of recurrance is 1-2%. There is some controvercy about the effectiveness of supplimental folic acid in preventing recurrant NTDs, but most feel that an adequate intake (4-8 mg/day) will decrease the risk by over 70%. This should be started before pregnancy.
