Our diagnosis was male factor--low motility, low number, abnormal shape, low, low, low...The fertility clinic advised that these were great indicators for ICSI, as I had been pregnant before. I was stimulated to produce eggs, of which about 20 were the result. Each was individually fertilized, and at the end of the three day external incubation period, we only had four eggs which had divided at all. And even at that, they were dividing slowly (as slow as molasses in January, actually!). So we decided to return all four to the uterus, and sadly, none took. I recommend that if you are going through the IVF, you might as well have ICSI to improve your chances. I had some difficulty deciding on the drug treatment, because there really are no long term studies surrounding this issue. We wanted a pregnancy, so took the drug related risks. Although we are well balanced couple, we went through much more sadness and strain on our relationship than we imagined. We have now decided to use donor sperm in an attempt to become pregnant. If I had known the side effects of the drugs and the heightened anxiety surrounding IVF, I wouldn't have pursued the course we did. No one told me how hard the process was on my psyche and our relationship. Donor sperm is pretty risk drug and rist free, and the clinic have a TON of profiles with whom they can you up. Good luck, Sue--you'll make the best decision you can at this time--that's all one can hope for.
