how common is toxoplasmosis?

I've heard all the warnings and horror stories about toxoplasmosis in the lay press. I was wondering how often doctor's actually see this problem in their pregnant patients and newborns? Has the frequency of this infection been reduced since litter box cleaning has been added to the pregnant no-no list? Do most cases come from infected cats, or from undercooked meat?

The impression I have gotten from my OB's in both pregnancies is that toxoplasmosis infections are very rare and the likelihood of acquiring it during pregnancy is minimal, particularly if you have always had cats and have had the same cats for a while. The vet even told me that he has never had a single cat test positive for the parasite.

Has the lay press overblown this problem? Or is it a very rare occurrence that can be so catastrophic that everyone needs to protect themselves?

Thanks, Andrea
