Are periods really necessary?

I have a question: With the Prempro HRT my doctor says that periods will probably be eliminated.

I thought periods were a healthy (and necessary?) way that the body cleans the uterus. I am over 50 and finished having children. Do I need periods? Will my uiterus be just as healthy w/out periods - ceteris paribus. Can you refer me to any sites?
