Dear Ann, In regards to your mother and break thru bleeding on hormone therapy; Depending on how your mother takes this medication Some women taken all pills daily and after one year have no bleeding. If this is how your mother takes her hormones and continues to have bleeding this does need to be evaluated to ensure no abnormal cell growth is occuring in the uterus. Most practitioners do what is called and endometrial biopsy This is done in the office, does not require anesthesia, takes about 15 min.( 15 min includes prep. area start to finish) the patient does experience some cramping duing the proceedure and for a short time after. It is best if the patient can take some over the counter medication like aleeve or motrin prior to having the proceedure to decrease the cramping. Once no abnormal cell have been established as the sample (biopsy) is sent to pathology and they determine not the md. is there is any abnormal cells. Then the practitioner should adjust medication and see if there is a change. Some time it takes a while to get the right dose or delivery system for each women. Sometime it may be changing the progesterone or changing from oral to a patch, Bottom line she should have a practitioner who is WILLING to work with her.. I have had this proceedure done a few times and as a practitioner have done this proceedure.
