Mucinous cysts are cysts that occur in the ovary. They are lined with cells that produce mucin. The biggest problem is that one can not know that that is what is there until after they have been removed and looked at under the microscope. The correct medical term is mucinous cystadenoma. ther e are also serous cystadenomas AND there are both mucinous and serous cystadenocarcinomas which are malignant forms. The only way to know what is what is to look through the microsocope in the pathology department. If your Physician is not a Gynecologic oncologist, ask if he/she has a gynecologic oncologist on standby to help him/her with the appropriate treatment if it is malignant. Also ask to talk to that Gynecologic oncologist prior to the operation to find out all the possibilities.
