54 yr old woman with breakthrough bleeding for 3 yrs?From: Ann (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 19 Apr 1999 21:29:40 -0500 (CDT)
This message is in regards to my mother. She has been menopausal for 3 years, since she turned 51. She takes estrogen, progesterin, and testostrone, I don't know the dosages. She has monthly periods due to the drugs. She has breakthrough bleeding most of the month. My mom is in a HMO. Her primary care physician is a family practioner. Her doctor thinks she has uterine cancer. She makes my mother go through uterine scrapings once a year, without anesthesia. This has been going on once a year, for three years. All results have been normal. Mom was referred to an OB/GYN once who said she was fine. I want her referred to another OB/GYN to determine if she needs to keep getting these uterine scrapings. I don't think the family practioner is qualified to diagnose uterine cancer. Is breakthrough bleeding in an older woman suspicious of uterine cancer? Is it necessary to keep having these tests? My mom doesn't want to go to another OB/GYN because she says, "They don't care about you once you go through menopause." Is that attitude valid? I have a great OB/GYN that I think takes her insurance that I would like for her to see. I appreciate any assistance, Ann
