I'm not a doctor, but I am a woman who has had this procedure performed on her with marvelous results.

I pursued treatment with Dr. David Redwine in Bend, Oregon, because I have endometriosis. Through research, I learned that he is "the man" when it comes to endo treatment.

However, one of the reasons I decided to, in fact, HAVE surgery with him was because he was the only doctor I encountered who could remove my uterine fibroids with a scope. I'd had a mini-laparotomy the year before and did not want to have to recover from the larger incision again.

Not only did he remove my fibroids with a scope, but he also removed diseased tissue from the cul-de-sac and uterosacral and broad ligaments. It's my understanding that most docs don't feel comfortable dealing with the cul-de-sac or ligaments with a scope, either.

I don't know how long the procedure of removing the fibroids via the vagina has been around, but it worked great for me. My pain during my recovery was less than half of what it had been after the mini laparotomy procedure.

If you can find a doctor who you feel confident can perform this procedure, I'd recommend it highly. It is my understanding, however, the uterine fibroid removal is a bit "tricky" because there is an active blood flow to a fibroid (as opposed to a cyst).

One doctor who operated on me before Dr. Redwine didn't feel comfortable attempting to remove the fibroids. He said he was afraid of causing too much bleeding with the result of having to remove my uterus completely. I was pleased that he recognized his own limitations.

I hope this helps. Best of luck.
