Should I use backup? Is my body ignoring pill hormones?

I had posted previously about a sudden shortening in period length. The general opinion (mom, nurse, etc) is that it's stress causing the shorter periods. However, one person's experience worries me. One person said that the same thing happened to her and that what it was was her body had adapted to the pills and began ignoring the hormones. A switch of perscription took care of it. Is this possible? If so, should I use back-up birth-control? My doctor does not get back from vacation until later in the month, I will see her then, but wonder if I should use back-up in the meantime. I'm not ready for kids yet. (I know, no one is ever ready.) :)
