gynecologic oncologistsFrom: Robin (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 30 Mar 1999 01:41:14 -0600 (CST)
I hope this isn't also a subject that is banned at this forum. Why is it not acknowledged by ob/gyns and doctors in general, that a laparotomy for a suspected gynecologic cancer (especially ovarian cancer) should be referred to a gynecologic oncologist? Does anyone know the answer to this? A gyn/onc is specially trained and board certified to do the staging and debulking of tumor that is so essential to the survival of any woman in this situation. I am an ovarian cancer survivor and I know many women whose surgery and staging was done by an ob/gyn. In many cases, these women had to undergo a second surgery in order to be properly staged and debulked. Sometimes, it was too late to do that. I hope that ob/gyns will more and more acknowledge that all women have the right to be referred for the best possible surgical outcome. This isn't a shortcoming on their part. It is pro- fessionalism at its best. Also, any of you women who are having vague symtoms such as digestive problems, bloating, pain, do not give up until you get to the root of the problem. Don't allow doctors to brush off your symtoms. It could be something very serious.
