Joan:

You are right to be concerned. A cyst in a post-menopausal woman is something to be dealt with immediately, especially if your mother had ovarian cancer. I am an ovarian cancer survivor and I can tell you that you don't want to fool around when it comes to a possible diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Chances are that it isn't ovarian cancer, but you are wise to want it checked out right away.

You need to see a gynecologic oncologist. They are the only doctors who specialize in gynecological cancers. A gyn/onc will give you the proper tests and make recommendations accordingly. If surgery is indicated, a gyn/onc is the specialist who is trained in the proper staging and debulking that could save your life.

Remember, ovarian cancer is not a death sentence. If you have it (and you very well might not), there are much more promising treatments than in the past.

Here is a website you might want to check out:

http://listserv.acor.org/archives/ovarian.html

It's called the Ovarian Problems Discussion List and there is a wealth of information there.

Best of luck and please let us know what happens.
