How big is too big?From: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 22 Mar 1999 17:38:50 -0600 (CST)
It seems like I have been measuring large throughout my pregancy. But the last two times, I have really gotten bigger: At 20 weeks, I measured about 23 1/2 cm. At 24 weeks, I measured 29 1/2 cm (this was the 2nd measurement after he got 33 the first time). I had a sonogram at 19 weeks that saw only one baby, so I assume there is only one baby (can a sonogram miss this?). My dates should be pretty accurate based on my BBT charts -- I can't imagine I'm a whole month off. At 24 weeks, I had the 1-hour glucose screen that came back as 86. I assume this rules out gestational diabetes. My first baby was 7# at 37 weeks. I started this pregnancy about 25# overweight, and have gained 17# through 24 weeks. Is the excess weight the cause of measuring so large? I am 5'4" and my husband is 5'10" with reasonably normal weight, so neither of us are exceptionally large people. How much discrepancy between size and dates requires further investigation? What can cause a discrepancy of 5 cm? My doctor doesn't seem particularly worried at this point, but I want to be an informed patient and ask the right questions. Thanks, Andrea
