Adhesions? Let me tell you about mine...

Hi, I haven't been here for a while because I finally found a gyn who listened to me when I said I thought I had adhesions.

I had appendicitis 10 years ago and went to the ER. Although I told the doctor I thought I had appendicitis, and displayed the classic symptoms, he diagnosed me with an infection of the stomach lining. The next evening the pain subsided, and my symptoms became confusing. Two WEEKS later, I was diagnosed with an absess secondary to a perforated appendix. Then I was admitted to the hospital for 15 days of antibiotics. AT NO TIME, NO MATTER HOW MUCH WE ASKED, DID ANY ONE OF THE DOCTORS SAY THERE WOULD BE ANY PROBLEMS FOLLOWING THIS. I was 16 at the time.

For the past ten years I have endured daily back pain, UNREAL menstrual cramps that have progressively gotten worse, and pain during sex. Oh, and I have been unable to get pregnant. To make a long story short, adhesions took over my pelvis. My uterus was turned to the right, and my right ovary stuck to the bottom of it (the tube was smashed between the two). My left ovary, on the other hand, was stuck to my left side, as was part of the tube. I had adhesions kinking my small intestines, and the surgeon couldn't even see my pelvic organs until he spent an hour detaching my omentum from the abdominal wall. He said it's been like this since the appendicitis.

The left tube and ovary were unsalvageable and were removed, and I have been remarkably pain-free for the past five weeks. The right tube was flared open, though my doctor doesn't expect it to ever work. So now I am infertile-- well, not now, but since 1989. This was a result of the perforated appendix, not the appendectomy.

My only clue was when I got copies of the appendectomy surgery report last year. It said there were adhesions between the omentum and abdominal wall, "as would be expected." Well, thanks for not bothering to tell me!

This was preventable, and even after it wasn't, SOMEONE COULD HAVE TOLD ME.

To the doctors and nurses who wonderfully devote their time to this forum: Is it standard practice not to tell patients about adhesions, or possible reproductive damage after something like this? Why wouldn't anyone have told me, even after the surgeon saw adhesions that he expected to be there????
