Re: Confused new mother

We did this when my husband broke his wrist a week before quitting his job (with health insurance) to move to another state (to be covered on my insurance). My understanding is that as long as you are continuously covered by some employer health plan, they can not enforce pre-existing condition exclusions. The idea is to keep people from being trapped in low-paying job because they can't afford to lose health coverage for a pre-existing condition. However, I believe they can have limits if you were not previously insured by a group plan. I am not an expert, but I have wandered through this mess before. We ended up having to buy my husband COBRA coverage because the new rule wasn't going into effect until 1/1/98 (this was November 1997). Also, confirm with the state insurance commission what the rules are in your state.

Most states have some provision for uninsured women and children to get pre-natal and well-child care. I would recommend checking with the county health department to find out what options are available. Many county health departments have some sort of women's services that could certainly help figure out the options.

Good luck to your sister!
