About leaving the ovaries intact....

I just read a statement on the internet (lost the address) that when a hysterectomy is performed and the ovaries are left in the body, there is a 50% chance that the ovaries will fail within 5 years. Is this just some wild overstatement, or does the data support this statistic? That seems incredibly high to me. Thanks in advance for your comments.
