Terrified - Can someone tell me EXACTLY what happens during a LEEP?From: ally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 5 Mar 1999 16:34:19 -0600 (CST)
Perhaps one of the physicians in the group can help me here. I have had abnormal paps off and on for the last 10 years, mainly bouncing back and forth between "normal" and "ASCUS." Three years ago I was diagnosed with severe cervicitis, and my GYN started monitoring the situation with colposcopies and cervical biopsies. Dx was pretty much the same: ASCUS and severe cervicitis. The last biopsy (late January) showed CIN II. I go for a repeat exam and pap smear (no colp) in April. If the dysplasia hasn't regressed by then, my GYN plans to procede with a LEEP. Given the "rapid progression" since August's bx (which showed minimal inflamation and a normal pap), he anticipates needing to perform the LEEP. Can someone tell me EXACTLY what happens during a LEEP? How long does the procedure take? How much does it hurt - honestly? Can I ask to be sedated? How much does it hurt afterward? How long should I expect to bleed? My reason for asking is that I am absolutely terrified of GYN procedures. The punch bx (done along with the colp) is supposed to be "just a cramp." Unfortunately, despite three aleve beforehand, the procedure still causes me quite a bit of pain. The last two times in fact, I've gone home with prescriptions for Darvocet and spend the remainder of the day on the couch. Just the colposcopy and punch bx are enough to make me very anxious, and I can't imagine having to have the LEEP. I had hoped doing some research beforehand would make me feel more comfortable. Instead, all I am hearing are horror stories - a colleague of mine actually got SHOCKED by the electrified loop during her procedure!! On the up side, my GYN is very supportive. I think he will do whatever it takes to make me comfortable (both physically and mentally) during the procedure. I'd like to know what is reasonable to ask for when I talk with him in April. Can anyone help?
