Are genital warts forever?

My husband and I were just discussing cervical cancer and how it can be caused by HPV. He told me that about 20 years ago, he contracted genital warts. He went to the doctor and had the warts removed. The doctor told him that "they will treat it and that was it". He has since read that the virus that causes genital warts stays with you forever. Is that true? If so, is the virus HPV and am I at risk for anything? We were both tested for all testable sexually transmitted diseases before we were married and they were negative. Do I have anything to worry about?

Thanks.
