Hi Andrea - I am not a doctor, but from a family with high risk factors. I was given the opportunity to have my blood tested for the breast cancer gene, then undergo mastectomies if I indeed had the gene. I chose not to. It was a hard decision to make, but I felt that with the support of my OB-GYN, regular breast exams, and mammograms, that if anything developed we would catch it in time. I also was advised that if I had this test performed, and if in fact I was found to have the gene, it would be entered in my permanent health record, and I could be denied medical insurance, if I changed carriers down the road.
