Timing of perimenopausal FSH testing (and a couple more questions)From: Angela (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 12 Feb 1999 16:33:40 -0600 (CST)
Hello again...As I struggle toward a decision on how to play my medical odds, another question has occurred to me.
It would sure help to have an idea when menopause is likely to come.
>From the archives, I get the impression that the doctors here don't put FYI, I'm 46 and have had intermittent perimenopausal-type symptoms, including menstrual irregularity, for about 18 months; I have a 10-week uterus from recurrent fibroids, presumed endometriosis that is presumed to be contributing to IBS, and a not-quite-three-inch ovarian cyst (which is said to look like an endometrioma on sonogram). Lately, however, my periods are much less heavy and painful than they used to be, and I am more troubled by fatigue, "brain fog," memory problems and depressed mood than by anything "physical." What I'm wondering is: At what point in the menstrual cycle should FSH be measured--or does the timing not matter? Also, can you give me an idea how you interpret the results? Is it important to know estradiol level as well? Finally, on the subject of the ovarian cyst: Do you agree with testing for CA-125 and CEA in this situation? Thank you for reading and considering my message.
