There has never been any question as to whether or not adhesions are painful -- they are. The big questions are - why do they form and reform, how can they be prevented and why do some people have more problems with them than others. If you take a look at the logical sequence of cause and effect some of the answers become clearly obvious. Any time soft tissue is cut it will form a scar - some people tend to form denser scar tissue than others, some people scar easier than others. Adhesions are basically scar tissue. Your doctor is reluctant to do any more surgery at this time because he knows that it will lead to more adhesions and he is trying to spare you another round of this vicious cycle. I had adhesions that formed originally from a tubal ligation, the adhesions were removed but quickly reformed. When I had my hysterectomy last March the adhesions were removed again and, luckily for me, the saline solution used to keep the organs "floating freely" worked and I have no symptoms of adhesions. I do not normally develop dense scar tissue and the few scars I've devoloped over my lifetime are barely noticeable (including those from childhood skinned knees and the like). It's hard to be patient, it's hard to keep going when you feel so miserable and when you have people depending upon you it makes it even harder to cope. Hopefully the pain management clinic will be able to come up with the right medication or combination to help you until your body has healed sufficiently from the previous surgeries. You have a pretty complicated situation in that you are not falling clearly into any one specialist's field, it looks like it's going to have to be a joint effort between your different doctors in coming up with a solution. You need to help them by not hiding anything from them. I know, you don't want to be a whiner or complainer and you don't want to feel like you're wearing out the doctors but they really need to know what's going on. Keep a daily log so you can clearly illustrate to them what is happening. As for the problems with constipation - extra fluids and plenty of fiber will keep your BM's softer and less painful. Not a cure but should offer you a degree of relief. I'm sure you've also noticed by now that stress is not helping, try really hard to relax. Meditate, take a long soak in a tub, read a dimestore novel, color in a coloring book with your child (actually, I have my own coloring book and box of crayons) anything to buy yourself a few minutes of mindless diversion. Worrying constantly is only going aggravate and exacerbate your symptoms. I'm hoping for the best for you,
