Re: Possible Ovarian Cancer?

Diana,

I can tell you what I went through for my lap to remove an ovarian cyst. It went really well, I was admitted to the hospital around 4:00pm and had the surgery around 9:00pm. I think total time was 2 hours. My husband spent the night with me in the room, although in retrospect I wish I hadn't asked him. The nurses kept waking him up when they checked on me.

The surgery went fine. It's general anesthesia. If you tend to get nauasted or vomit on narcotic meds, tell them before you go into surgery. I had pain getting into the bed after the surgery, but my nurses were great and found another pain med. They told me morphine doesn't really work that well for this problem. I didn't have a cathether, and needed help getting to the bathroom (unplugging the I.V. stand). The nurses can help you with that. i was discharged 24 hours after going in.

To prepare for surgery bring very loose fitting clothes to wear home. Anything tight around the waist will hurt. Overalls or loose pants with a drawstring waist are great. I used an ice pack (on the incision area) in the hospital and at home. It helped the incision pain. Try and have your house already clean. My surgery was emergency and my Mom came over afterwards to clean my house. Pick out some good books or movies. Daytime T.V. stinks.

When you are at home, try not to lay around in bed. I walked as much as I could, and when I got tired, I sat for awhile then got up to walk again. I was off pain meds in 2 to 3 days. The whole experience was not that bad. I've had knee surgery and it was much worse. And my doctor thought mine might be cancer too, and it wasn't. I hope yours is okay as well.

Good luck. If you have any other questions about surgery you can email me.

Ann
