Bifid uvula/cleft palate

My 4-year-old son has a bifid uvula and one of his doctor's explained that this is the very mildest form of a cleft palate. I am pregnant again and read in one of my pregnancy books that cleft palate is genetic and having one affected child increases the chances of having another. Neither my husband or I has a cleft.

How much does having a child with such a minor defect increase our chances of having another child with a cleft? Does it just increase our chances of having a child with the same type of cleft or are we at greater risk for any type of cleft? Can clefts be identified on a sonogram?

Thanks, Andrea
