Dr Hill driven out?! :-(

Wow, you go away for a few days, and all heck breaks loose.

i can't believe that the New Year gets underway with Dr Hill giving us up, although I can certainly understand why he has had enough of it. It's too bad the flamers have ruined it for the rest of us by driving away one of our stallwarts and I hope he takes with him the knowledge that he has done so much good and achieved so much respect here.

I think of myself as a pretty solid feminist and frankly these women who think that you have to be a woman to help women, give feminism a bad name. It's bias, plain and simple, and I for one am grateful to any physician who spends their time answering our questions. Why do we feel the need to say "male doctor" or "female doctor" and judge accordingly? Good doctors just want to be doctors, and that's all they should be.

Unfortunately, I've been around the Internet and newsgroups long enough to realize that the tenor of a group can be destroyed by such flamebait. The best thing to do is ignore it. It is in the nature of newsgroups and their frequently transient audience that the same points come up over and over again. Those few participants who hang around a long time can easily burn out.

As for the writer who started this, she will be happier on what I think of as the "conspiracy theory" women's health groups. Those are the ones that consider everything treatable by herbs and that hysterectomies are always wrong and a feature of a "male dominated cultural hegemony" and so forth. Such errant nonsense--and I'm not joking, they are out there. In my quests to find information before my surgery, coming to this forum was like finding a safe harbor after storms of misinformation. I for one very much appreciate the medical professionals who selflessly inform and assist us and who made a real difference to MY care.

Finally the recent flame came from a woman who signed herself "Dr". She didn't appear to be a medical doctor. Speaking as one with numerous letters after my own name, I find it salutary to remember that PhD often stands for Piled High and Deep.

To Dr Hill: you will be missed, and we thank you for a wonderful legacy. Please be well and happy and remember the good stuff. To our other Drs and medical professionals: you are appreciated and respected. Please keep up the great work fighting ignorance.
