Hair loss and fertility - Questions about Rogaine and PropeciaFrom: Sharon (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 6 Jan 1999 01:25:05 -0600 (CST)
I have a followup question. I have been suffering from extreme hair loss for the past six months. As I mentioned in my previous post my hormomes appear to be within normal range. (Testosterone 37 ng/dL; Sensitive TSH 1.8 mIU/L; Androstenedione 1.2 ng/mL; Progesterone 8.7 ng/mL; and DHEA Sulfate .5 ug/mL) I heard much in the news about Rogaine and Propecia. I have heard that women should avoid them completely due to possible birth defects. I am not seeking to become pregnant now, but will wish to do so in about two years. (I am 35 and engaged to be married). Can women who desire to pregnant in the future safetly take EITHER of these drugs to stop hair loss. Can Rogaine be used and then stopped prior to becoming pregnant without harming the baby? After stopping, how long should women wait before trying to conceive? (Propecia seems to be more harmful than Rogain with pregnant women being told not even to touch the tablets). Any information would be helpful. Thanks.
