Sorry, seems like you had a bad experience and that has clouded your thoughts a little. I have found that most doctors/gyn's (whether male or female) feel the same way we do about them;...pelvic exams are a very necessary part of good medical care but defintely not the most pleasant aspect. Do you know for sure that the infection was caused by the doctor's examination? Maybe it was already present and the examination just aggravated the condition. I personally have had both male and female doctors/gyn's and quite honestly I prefer the male doctors, but that's just me. I find that they are particularly sensitive about a women's feelings toward the exam and try extra hard to conduct the exam in a dignified and skillful manner showing care and concern. Hope you get to feeling better soon.
