Re: 4 week appointment after miscarriageFrom: steph (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 31 Dec 1998 08:25:34 -0600 (CST)
Mary- First, I am very sorry for your loss. It must be very difficult to think about and deal with, especially this time of the year. I hope that you have gotten whatever support that you need. As far as the follow-up app't., my doctor did do a pelvic exam to make sure everything looked ok and that my uterus had returned to its normal size and that my cervix had closed. This was actually the quickest part. Most of the appointment he spent talking about what happened and how we would handle things for the next pregnancy since he knew I wanted to start trying as soon as being given the green light. He also made sure that I was doing ok emotionally and that I had the emotional support that I needed. One other comment, that I thought was interesting, was that he said he always made sure his patients who had miscarried came back within 4 weeks or so to help get us comfortable with being there. He said he has seen many many women never be quite comfortable with going back to the office because that is where they got the news or had their tests or whatever. His experience is that by addressing the anxiety and other emotional issues that the healing process goes smoother, especially in light of the fact that by that point most physical symptoms or effects have been finished. Anyhow, this is what my appointment was like. It was difficult, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Hopefully one of the physicians on the board can give a "medical view", as mine obviously was from the patient view. If you do have any other questions, please feel free to write. Steph
