Taysachs carrier, abnormal AFP, and amniocentesisFrom: Jennifer (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 30 Dec 1998 21:59:41 -0600 (CST)
I just got my results from the AFP today and was told they were abnormal and could indicate neural tube defects. I realize the next step in analyzing this is to have an amniocentesis. How accurate is the amniocentesis in specifying whether the child has the gene for a disease or actually has the disease? My mother was told I had Taysachs, but my father got tested for it and wasn't a carrier. It turns out I was only a carrier of the Taysachs gene. Could my being a carrier produce abnormal AFP results? My fiance is in Korea and I asked him to get tested for Taysachs. The results came back negative, but he said he would have to get the test done again as the blood wasn't frozen all the way when it got to Okinawa (He's in the military and had to do it this way). I know the AFP results aren't high because of a further along pregnancy. My fiance was only home for 10 days in September, so it's not much of a window to work with. If somebody could help me with these questions, I'd appreciate it. Please E-mail me at MikeysLvr@aol.com.
