Re: Confused!From: Don Shuwarger, M.D. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 30 Dec 1998 18:14:53 -0600 (CST)
Andrea, AGUS (AGCUS) is even more worrisome than SIL or ASCUS. AGUS incorporates the range of changes from inflammation to adenocarcinoma in situ! The professors and texts tell us that if someone has an AGUS pap smear, and a negative colposcopy, that a **cone** biopsy is required to exclude adenocarcinoma of the endocervix/endocervical glands. This has exactly been my experience. I have patients whose adenoca of the endocervical glands were discovered by an AGCUS pap. Please don't delay the evaluation of this potentially problematic pap smear. The other possibility is to ask the laboratory that originally reported the AGCUS smear to review the slide again to be certain they are making the right call. Don
