Cause can be weak connective and fibrous tissue in cervix leading to early shortening and dilitation. Also may be due to past surgery on or thru cervix, previous very rapid labors, infection,or preterm uterine contractions.Outcome depends largely on cause and duration of pregnancy when diagnosis made.Treatment could require a pursestring suture placed around cervix.Discuss this with your physician.
