ovulation

I was wondering if it was possible to ovulate just every other month? Right around the 14th day of my cycle every other month I get that sticky discharge that my doctor says usually signals ovulation. The other months I have almost nothing.

Also could there be a link between not ovulating and severe cramps with my period? The periods when I think I have ovulated are of a moderate flow that lasts 4 days and I have very little cramping. on the periods where I think I am not ovulating I have 3-4 days of very light flow with a lot of cramping from the moment my period starts until 2-3 days later. Does any of this make sense? I am trying to find a way to control these horrible cramps that seem to come every other month.
