Vulvar Itching

For six months I have had vulvar itching and some soreness on just the left side of my vulvar. It is always in the same place and the "spot" looks pink or sometimes red.

I have been to the doctor once. She just looked at it and prescribed Lotrisone. That made the problem worse, so she then prescribed Nizoral. The problem seemed better (I used the cream for 3-4 weeks), but about one week after I stopped using the Nizoral, the problem reappeared. The doctor (not a gyn) has now suggested I try a zinc ointment (OTC) for a week or two to see if that helps. I guess that she thought my problem at first was a yeast infection (even though she took no samples and I have never had an abnormal discharge).

I wonder if this treatment option is normal?? Also, the doctor has only looked at it that one time. How long do I keep trying different ointments before I whould ask if there is anything else that could or should be done?? According to stuff I have read on this site, there might be other things she could be looking for, but how long do I have to wait (I saw her for the first time two-three months ago).

Thanks, Anne
