I had a hysterectomy (keeping my ovaries)along with bladder and rectum repair in October 1997.The surgery itself went well, but after the surgery I experienced some pain in my left leg. My doctor suspected a pulled muscle, but as it continued, he ordered a Dopler study which showed no blockage. As of my six week post surgery checkup,I continued with an odd feeling in my leg and noticed that I began to have some swelling around the ankle area. I had also developed "frozen shoulder" which was attributed to inflamation in my left shoulder/arm cause by my IV having been incorrectly inserted (which had caused swelling in my hand/wrist area). In January I went to an orthopedic surgeon for my shoulder and was given exercises to do for that. By my six month post surgery check, I had begun having more swelling in both legs, but moreso in the left leg. It would come and go and my ob (a different one than the one who had performed the surgery) told me it was probably due to the length of time I was in surgery in the stirrups. He also said it would probably go away. During the next six months I would have occasions of leg swelling and it seemed to get worse at times, even to the point of causing a very tight feeling in my left leg because of the amount of swelling. I also had two occasions where blood vessels in my left eye broke after I had been driving in the car for a couple of hours which I was told by an eye doctor was probably related to the swelling in my legs. So I went to see an internal doc who told me she thought the swelling was due to weight gain as I had gained about 15 pounds since the surgery. This seemed odd to me as I had weighed this much before and had never had the leg swelling. But as the swelling seemed to come and go, it was not very significant when I went to see her, and there was no pitting when she pushed on my legs/ankles. Had I been having the kind of swelling I often experience, she would have seen that the left leg is much more swollen than the right and my shoe would leave an imprint on my foot where the foot swelled over the sides. We did talk about the possibility of my working at the computer for several hours each day as contributing to the swelling. She had blood work done which ruled out thyroid problems and diabetes. She also perscribed Microzide which has seemed to help some. I have tried to change my habits to get up more often while working at the computer. But I would like to know if there is something more I could do to solve this problem, or if this is something I will just have to live with from now on. Also, there are a lot of heart problems in my family, is there any possibility this is related to heart problems? I had an EKG before surgery which was ok, and the internal doc listened to my heart and gave me an overall checkup. I don't take any medications other than the Microzide. I had been taking ibuprofen for the frozen shoulder, but have not for several months. I am in overall good health except for weighing about 20 more pounds than I would like (160 lbs. at 5'6"), but I have started a hand weight program.
