I was skimming through the posts from the last couple of days, and was interested in the posts from the woman who had a traumatic birth experience and then found herself suffering from postpartum depression. I, too, had a traumatic birth experience and was also put on Zoloft once I sought help for my problems. However, the REAL healing and peace didn't come until I found out that I wasn't nuts... my experience was very much worth grieving over. It was a horrible thing to have happened to anyone. What really helped for me was when I went to a weekend workshop called "Grieving and Healing from a Traumatic or Difficult Birth Experience", offered by Nancy Wainer Cohen. She, and the other women there (as well as many I have met before and since), truly validated my feelings, and allowed me to freely grieve what I lost in that birth. So, I guess my message for anyone who is suffering from this, and also for any caregivers who are approached by their patients with this, is to PLEASE consider what's is causing the depression, and provide support to deal with it, rather than prescribe only a pill (I'm not saying Zoloft isn't helpful.. it was for me, but I needed more than that).
