How to Be an Informed Medical Consumer????From: lauren (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 11 Nov 1998 10:40:06 -0600 (CST)
Potentially controversial subject matter: In the past week in the New York area, there has been a lot of news about a terrible tragedy that happened at a major NYC hospital - a 30 year old woman died during a routine hysteroscopy, potentially as a result of the negligence of the two doctors present and a medical supply salesman who was allowed to actually take part in the surgery. The woman had not consented to a non-doctor taking part in her surgery and had not consented to the use of experimental equipment which was used in her surgery. Turns out one of the two doctors had already had a number of complaints filed against him, including the deaths of two babies under his obstetrical care. My question: how can patients find out if their doctors have complaints in their records? I feel as if there is no way that I would ever know if any of my doctors had had incident reports filed against them unless I check with some agency. But what agency??????????
