Hi Janet, I had a supracervical hysterectomy for fibroids 2 months ago and twice since then have had a little mini-period, with spotting for a day or two, each 4 weeks apart. My surgeon's nurse practitioner (via the voicemail phonetag) says that this is due to "cervical glands" and is not unexpected for keeping the cervix. The previous posts on this subject (yours?) on this forum said that this probably reflects small amounts of endometrial tissue that is still active and responding to hormone which makes sense to me.

I can certainly live with my mini-periods, although it would have been nice for my peace of mind to know that this is a possible complication of keeping my cervix when my surgeon and I discussed that decision. Is such spotting common in these cases?

I would have chosen kept my cervix regardless of this info. The reading I did prior to surgery suggested that there is a reduced chance of vaginal shortening or bladder complications when the cervix is left behind. Getting an annual PAP exam is not a problem. Most important though, is that I did not want to lose more of my body than I had to, to solve my problems with my uterus. Since there is nothing wrong with my cervix, I wanted to keep it. My surgeon , although she usually takes the cervix in these surgeries, discussed the issue with me thoroughly, and agreed with my wishes.

PS: I just returned from a 2 wk business trip and I'm working out in the gym again--9 weeks since surgery and physically I'm doing fine. Thanks to WHF-participants for their support.
