Re: C-Section and Postpartum ExerciseFrom: Suzanne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 10 Nov 1998 09:51:29 -0500
First of all, let me say that ALL women should do Kegels, regardless of whether they've had a vaginal or abdominal delivery, or whether they've even had children at all! Kegels are of life-long benefit for all women -- they decrease problems with incontinence (leaky bladder) and increase sexual pleasure. During pregnancy, the perineum is under pressure (and stretched some) from the weight of the uterus, and it is also relaxed some by hormones. So even with a c-section, there is some need for strengthening. Just another example of misinformation put out by the "What to Expect..." authors. I have never heard the advice given by your doctor, nor the reasoning. What I have heard is that by 8 weeks you can slowly and gently resume all abdominal exercises, as you feel up to it. Of course, if anything hurts, STOP! ****************************** Suzanne S. Powell, ICCE, CD Childbirth Educator, Doula, Student Midwife -- Peachtree City, Ga.
