DR's Please Help! How to prevent cysts when BCP's don't work?From: Ann (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 2 Nov 1998 13:19:28 -0600 (CST)
I am at my wits end. I have had 3 previous cysts, one which required surgery. I know that cysts are normal, and I am talking about abnormal cysts that don't shrink. I was taking triphasic bcp's and got the first three cysts. I do take my bcp's religiously. After the third cyst, my doctor switched me to monophasic pills in the hope that it would help. That was 4 months ago. Today I found that I have another abnormally large cyst. We're going to wait and see if it will shrink on its own. The pain is not that bad. What can I do? I feel so hopeless. I almost lost my ovary in the surgery and I'm only 24. I don't want to give up my future fertility. I'm married and I wanted to get my degree before we had children. Although my surgery was not that bad, I do not want to repeat it. I want to prevent these cysts from ever forming. I know how cysts form, and that it is unusual for a woman to get cysts while taking bcp's. My doctor told me that it means I'm ovulating while on the pills. He assured me that I was still protected against pregancy. How can I still have the same level of protection as other women on the pill that don't ovulate? Please help me. I'm so fearful of my body. Thank you, Ann
