To be perfectly honest - with my first pregnancy the Lamaze didn't help me much past the transistion phase of my labor. I had put in a full day of work - my labor started at noon and I continued working in the office until closing as my husband worked for the same company and I didn't dare try to drive myself the 15 miles home. By the time I reached transition I was too exhausted to focus and I had a hard time remembering the breathing patterns. With my second pregnancy I took the refresher course and I did fine all the way through. My doctor was wonderful, he came to check on me frequently and walked the halls with me, even rubbing my shoulders and coaching me when the contractions came. (My husband hadn't arrived at the hospital yet and nearly missed the birth). My doctor coached both of us all the way through the delivery as well. Lamaze is a good thing to learn, the classes are very informative and most instructors cover everything from late pregnancy development all the way through birth and breastfeeding. I've used my Lamaze breathing at other times as well - while recovering from my recent hysterectomy the breathing helped make moving easier during those first couple of weeks.
