Twins, Ultrasound, & Fetal heartbeat

First, thank you to the doctors who responded to my messages from yesterday. You are a great help.

My Mom is a twin, which supposedly gives me a greater chance of having twins.

Since I went in on Tuesday for an ultrasound (end of 6th week actual pregnancy, end of 8th since LMP) and they couldn't see a heartbeat, is it possible that it might have something to do with the possibility of having twins?

One doctor said that maybe one twin died and it might be obstructing the view of the other.

Do twins develop at slower rates?

Are they that much smaller than a single fetus?

Thanks for your comments- wendy
