Unfortunately, health care in the US is extraordinarily complicated, so I have had to put some thought into your question to overcome the obstacles imposed by hospital fees, malpractice issues, and medical ethics. Even if a medical school had a program to allow patients to volunteer for resident surgical education (medical students do not do surgery, but they do assist senior doctors and resident doctors), it is extremely unlikely the hospital would allow such free surgery for many patients. The hospital would lose a lot of money (about $2000-5000 US for each laparoscopic procedure). Also, some malpractice lawyers might suggest that the care you receive is less than that received by "paying patients." In fact, in many med schools underserved patients actually get *better* care than patients in private communities, even if the private patients have full insurance coverage!

The answer, I think, is to approach a laparoscopic training center. Your surgery would be under the direct supervision of a "master laparoscopist" who is showing other doctors state-of-the-art techniques. There are a few of these around the country. The only one I know of personally is in Atlanta. However, I cannot recall the name. If you search under "laparoscopic training" or "laparoscopy training" and "Atlanta" I'll bet you can find it.

Good luck, please enjoy your time here in the US, and thank you for your question.
