How common is Secondary Infertility?

My husband & I appear to be experiencing secondary infertility. We are now into our 12th month of trying to concieve our second child. I'm finding this a little distressing as it took us only 1 month to concieve our first child, a wonderful 23 month old boy. I nievely believed that it was easy once so it will be that way for baby number two. Could the first pregnancy change my body so much that it is difficult to concieve again?

Can breast feeding & weaning change my hormones so much as to change my cycle for good? My period returned at 8 months post partum. I continued to nurse until my son was 18 months old. During this time my cycles were 28-29 days except for the occational 21 day cycle. After weaning the first 2 months were normal then they went to 24 days, 17 days & 24 days, this seemed to occur at the same time that my milk went from being whitish & clear to looking more colostrum-like (I believe this is normal when you dry out). I believe that I am ovulating given that I have used ovulation predictor kits for the last 4 months & have had a positive LH surge each time. For the last 2 months I have taken BBT & see a rise in tempeture following ovulation. My mucous changes & my cervix feels softer, open & lower. I get ovulation pain lasting about a day. For the end of my cycle I appear to have many of the same symptoms as when I was pregnant (ie. tender breasts, slight morning sickness, even my hair stops falling out at its normal rate). My cycle was short (26 days) during the 3 months I was off the pill before getting pregnant.

I have not yet seen a doctor as we have moved to Madison, WI and my last OB/GYN was in NJ but am thinking of doing so. What kind of tests can I expect? Could I have a luteal phase defect?

I am finding this very hard as I really want a second child, yet we already have a wonderful boy. Friends keep telling me to be happy with what I already have.
