Tina, The cysts that you describe now are not unusual. Were the cysts noted while you were off the pill larger. Given the irregular nature of your cycle when you were off the ocp's, it is likely that you were not ovulating at that point. This could be explained by a variety of things. First, it is not unusual to not ovulate for a period of 2-4 months after discontinuing the ocp's. Second, it is not unusual for a patient who is anovulatory to have ovarian cysts-ovulation occurs by a cyst forming that contains the egg, when it gets to 2cm, it ruptures -> ovulation. If ovulation does not occur, the cyst can continue to grow and hang around for awhile. Often times, patients with anovulation/oligoovulation are diagnosed as polycystic ovarian disease. Whether or not this is your case is really academic. The bottom line is that when you decide to pursue pregnancy, your physician can provide a very mild ovulatory induction agent that will aid in ovulation and thus conception. When you are not pursuing pregnancy, it is a good idea to stay on the ocp's-it will keep the cysts supressed and regulate your menses.
