Patients with previous elective abortion

Do most ob/gyn's routinely encounter patients who have had elective abortions in the past? Does it bother them when a patient informs them of a previous abortion?

Is this piece of information particularly important for a normal pregnancy? I had an abortion when I was 16, and I really hate having to tell anyone this. I have not told most doctors this, except for my ob/gyn. I have since had a normal, full-term pregnancy and delivery, and so I wonder if it is really important to tell a new doctor this now. Will it have any impact on my care?

I was mortified when I got my son's medical records to find that the OB nurse had noted this fact on his chart from the delivery room -- they had asked during admission and answered truthfully. It's bad enough to have this information on my medical records, but I really hate the idea that this information was available to my son's pediatrician and his office staff. I don't see why it is relevant on the baby's record.

I have really tried to keep this information very private, with as few paper trails as possible. Now that I am pregnant again, I am wondering if I should be truthful about this fact. Even if I decide to tell my doctor, is there any reason to tell the OB nurse? Once I get to L&D, is a previous abortion really relevant?

Thanks!
