Update: results of my Uterine Artery embolization are in!

In July, I posted here that I had an embolization for uterine fibroids. At the time, one of the doctors who responded requested I post my results after some time had passed.

I am 4.5 months post procedure, and just got off the phone with my OB-GYN. I am excited to report that what I can "feel" physically is true: I have significant shrinkage, as confirmed by ultrasound, by both the ob-gyn and the interventional radiologist.

The first ultrasound, taken 2/98, showed 1 large fibroid 10.5 cm size, and several other ones, 2 of which were 4 cm. Incidentally, my procedure was done in July, 5 months after this ultrasound, and several physicians who manually examined me "thought" the larger fibroid had grown to 14 cm size (but I have no "objective", measurable proof of that..) So I go with the earlier number...

The ultrasound done last week shows that the largest fibroid is now 6.5 cm size, and the 2 4 cm/walnut sized ones are... gone. I could see this myself on the monitor... there's just a little scarring left, they look like shriveled up peas!

I am thrilled also with the after-effect: extremely light periods. Though mine were never drastically heavy, I can easily see the benefit to someone with truly heavy bleeding.

And best of all, the procedure was virtually painless, involved no surgery, left me out of commission for less than 1 week, and should I be nuts enough to want another child, I can still do so...
