Re: curring cystsFrom: Ann (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 26 Oct 1998 12:35:50 -0600 (CST)
I was where you are now a few months ago. I've had three cysts, one laparoscopic cyst draining. I was told before my laparoscopic procedure that I might wake up without my ovary. I was terrified. I am only 23, married 2 years, and I have way too many older friends that are infertile. I didn't want to end up like that. The most important thing for you is prevention. Are you taking birth control pills or Depo Provera injections? Doing either of these things will help prevent cysts. Some women (like me) will still get cysts while taking birth control pills. I was switched from triphasic pills to monophasic pills 4 months ago. My doctor and I are hoping that this will help (the FDA is investigating whether this is valid). I haven't had any cysts since (knock on wood). Do you know how cysts form? Search for ovarian cyst on the web. Or check out this site, there is a Dr. B. article on cysts. To briefly summarize, most cysts are a normal function of monthly cycles. Some cysts don't behave the way they should, and keep growing. Even these cysts will eventually go away on their own. If the cyst gets too large (6+ cm), it can damage the ovary. Draining or removing the cyst is then necessary. There are also other different types of cysts. Some cysts are more problamatic than others. Please get more information about cysts. It is very helpful. Cysts can cause pain. Pain can be a sign that the cyst has twisted the ovary (a need for surgery.) This type of pain is excruciating. Cysts can also press on other areas of the body, causing pain. I had horrible back pain with one of my cysts because of the things it was pressing on. I have also had a "pressure" feeling and pain during intercourse. My doctor is hesitant to prescribe pain medication because it can mask the twisted ovary pain. I take ibuprofen for my cysts, call the doctor to get an appt, and take it easy (stop doing my stomach crunches). If you do not trust your doctor you need to find another one. If you cannot switch, educate yourself about cysts and ask your doctor questions. Explain to him your fears and maybe he will understand. Mine is much more patient with me after I explained why I was scared. I would think that only a doctor could answer your question about fertility. I hope this helps.
