How to choose a doctor

I am interested in comments about how people choose a doctor.

I have read that when choosing an ob/gyn in particular it is a good idea to interview several before choosing one. Well, I have not found a dr. who would do that, or at least their receptionists weren't willing to schedule me for that. (Yes, I was willing to pay the normal office visit fee.)

Obviously, we should look for someone who is board-certified, but apart from that I have absolutely no idea how to know if a doctor is competent. I mean, I do read a lot and try to stay informed but on most issues I really don't know how to evaluate a physician.
