Atypia is a fancy word for "abnormal" and in most cases refers to an abnormality on a Pap smear of the cervix (the upper part of the vagina). In most cases this goes away on it's own, but it usually requires a closer look with an office procedure called "colposcopy." This is an up-close look in the vagina with a special magnifying lens. If the atypia is edging towards cervical cancer, the doctor can freeze or otherwise remove the abnormal areas, thus preventing cancer. It's a very common problem, and your daughter should feel free to ask any questions she wants. That's what we doctors get paid for!

Thanks for the question, and good luck to your daughter.
